Alessandro Allori

(Florence 1535 - 1607) Pietà(Alessandro Allori - Florence, 1535 - 1607) Oil on canvas, 253 x 181 cm - Uffizi Gallery, Florence In a book of memories of St. Mary monastery in Vallombrosa (this is the place where this painting was found) we can read that the "Pieta", which had been painted for the San Giovanni Guadalberto nella Badia Chapel, in 1789 was no more in that chapel. The painting had been moved to the sacristy in order to restore the parts which had been damaged from the seepages of water. We do not have any news about the picture until 1948, that is when it was backed. Backing was carried out with wax instead of Florentine paste, probably because of the damages repeatedly caused by dampness: in fact it seems that many falls of colour have been restored in different times. In 1951 the picture was in Vasaris house in Arezzo and in 1980 it underwent a new restoration by the Fortezza da Basso laboratories in Florence. This was certainly a partial intervention: a varnishing with a revision of the discoloured retouchings in view of the Medicean exhibition of Strozzi Palace. After that, the picture has been moved first to the Middle Ages Arts Museum in Arezzo and then to Modena, where it remained until 1996. In the same year, thanks to a paintings exchange, the picture goes to the Uffizi Gallery.
This painting was restored under the project BE PART OF HISTORY realised by VIVAHOTELS with the promotion of the ROMUALDO DEL BIANCO FOUNDATION.
The Project was born in 1994 in order to give a contribution to Florence Artistic Heritage with restoration of pieces of art trough the fundamental emotional involvement of the clients of VivaHotels.
By visiting the gallery where the masterpieces due to be restored is conserved, a VivaHotels guest contributes to the restoration without being involved in the direct cost of the sponsorship. Thus he becomes Patron of the Arts and his name will remain in the files of the Gallery forever.
